Brazil has joined the growing list of countries offering digital nomad visas to attract remote workers from around the world.
With its stunning beaches, vibrant culture, and relatively low cost of living, Brazil is becoming a popular choice for digital nomads. The Brazilian government introduced the digital nomad visa in January 2022, allowing eligible foreign nationals to live and work remotely in the country for up to one year, with the possibility of renewal.
To qualify for Brazil’s digital nomad visa, applicants must prove that they work remotely for a company outside Brazil or are self-employed with clients overseas. This visa is not intended for those seeking local employment. The applicant must provide a signed declaration or employment contract proving their remote work status. Freelancers must show evidence of their professional activity and income from international sources.
One of the key requirements is a minimum monthly income. As of now, applicants must earn at least US$1,500 per month or have a bank balance of US$18,000 at the time of the application. This financial requirement ensures that the applicant can support themselves while living in Brazil without relying on local employment or public funds.
Applicants must also provide proof of valid health insurance that covers them during their stay in Brazil. This is a critical requirement, as healthcare costs can vary, and private coverage helps ensure the applicant will have access to medical services when needed. The health insurance policy must cover the entire duration of the stay.
Other required documents include a valid passport with at least six months of validity, a recent criminal background check from the applicant’s home country or country of residence, and a completed visa application form. All documents not in Portuguese must be translated and notarized by a sworn translator.
The application process can be done through a Brazilian consulate or embassy abroad. After receiving the visa, digital nomads can enter Brazil and apply for a temporary residence permit with the Federal Police. This allows them to stay in the country legally while working remotely for the permitted duration.
Brazil’s digital nomad visa can initially be issued for up to 12 months, and it may be renewed for an additional year, provided the applicant still meets the eligibility criteria. This gives digital nomads the flexibility to settle in and explore Brazil while continuing their careers online.
With its unique mix of natural beauty, bustling cities, and a growing community of remote workers, Brazil is positioning itself as a competitive destination in the global remote work trend. The digital nomad visa opens up new opportunities for professionals looking for a change of scenery without sacrificing their careers.
